How our Smart report: ULEZ status check determine your vehicle's eligibility

Our smart report: ULEZ status checker assesses your vehicle’s compliance by tapping into the latest DVLA data and TfL’s emissions standards. Enter your vehicle’s registration number to find out if it meets the Euro emissions requirements needed to be ULEZ compliant, or if it falls into the non-compliant category, which means daily charges apply for driving in ULEZ areas.

Please be aware that while the checker provides insights based on TfL’s ULEZ regulations, it doesn’t guarantee complete accuracy. For more reliable results, particularly for older or unique vehicles, we recommend using the TfL vehicle checker available on their official website.

Certain vehicles might not be accurately assessed by our tool, including those built before January 1, 1973, vehicles with historic tax class, specialized equipment like farm machinery, and Ministry of Defence vehicles.

Our report updates regularly to reflect the latest ULEZ regulations, helping you stay informed about changes that could affect your compliance status.

The tool also provides insights into how your vehicle's compliance status might impact potential costs, giving you a clearer picture of your financial obligations.

What is the London ULEZ?

The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) was first introduced in London on April 8, 2019, to reduce air pollution and improve air quality in the city. Initially covering Central London, the ULEZ aimed to tackle the most polluted areas by requiring vehicles to meet strict Euro 4 (petrol) and Euro 6 (diesel) emissions standards.

On October 25, 2021, the ULEZ was expanded to cover a larger area within the North and South Circular roads. This expansion aimed to include more residential and commercial zones, further reducing pollution across Greater London.

As of August 29, 2023, the ULEZ has been extended to cover the entire Greater London area.

Vehicles not meeting the required emissions standards must pay a daily charge to drive within the ULEZ. The charge is £12.50 for cars, vans, and motorcycles, and £100 for lorries, buses, and coaches. For more detailed information on the ULEZ, including compliance checks and the latest updates, visit the TfL ULEZ webpage or the London.gov.uk ULEZ page.

Understanding ULEZ charges and Exemptions

The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in London aims to reduce air pollution by charging vehicles that do not meet specific emission standards. Here’s a breakdown of which vehicles are exempt from ULEZ charges and what you need to know if you’re considering scrapping your vehicle.

ULEZ compliant petrol cars

  • To avoid ULEZ charges, petrol cars must adhere to Euro 4, Euro 5, or Euro 6 emissions standards.
  • Typically, these vehicles were registered after January 2006. If your petrol car meets these standards, it will not incur ULEZ fees.

ULEZ compliant diesel cars

  • Diesel cars are exempt from ULEZ charges if they meet Euro 6 emissions standards. Generally, these vehicles were registered after September 2015. Ensure your diesel car complies with these standards to avoid additional costs

ULEZ compliant hybrid & electric cars

  • Diesel Hybrids: Must meet Euro 6 standards.
  • Petrol Hybrids: Must meet Euro 4 standards.
  • Electric Vehicles: All electric cars are ULEZ compliant.
  • Hybrid and electric vehicles that meet these criteria will not be subject to ULEZ charges.

ULEZ compliant vans & motorbikes

  • Diesel Vans: Must comply with Euro 6 emissions standards.
  • Petrol Vans: Must meet Euro 4 standards.
  • Motorbikes: Must adhere to Euro 3 standards.
  • Vans and motorbikes that meet these emissions standards are exempt from ULEZ charges.

ULEZ Scrappage Scheme

  • If your vehicle does not meet ULEZ standards and you prefer to scrap it, the ULEZ scrappage scheme offers financial incentives for qualifying households within Greater London.
  • Scrappage Incentives:
  • Motorbikes: Receive £1,000 for scrapping a motorcycle or moped.
  • Cars: Receive £2,000 for scrapping a car.
  • This scheme is designed to help you transition to more environmentally friendly transport options. To see if you qualify and to apply, visit the ULEZ Scrappage Scheme website.

Frequently Asked Questions About
London's ULEZ

The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is an area in London where only vehicles meeting stringent emissions standards can drive without incurring a charge. Non compliant vehicles incur a daily charge of £12.50. ULEZ aims to reduce air pollution by charging vehicles that do not meet the required Euro emissions standards.

The ULEZ charge applies in central London and expanded areas throughout the city up to the M25. It covers areas inside the North and South Circular Roads. For detailed maps and current coverage, visit the TfL ULEZ page.

You can determine if you need to pay the ULEZ charge by checking your vehicle’s emissions standards against the ULEZ requirements. If you drive into the ULEZ with a non-compliant vehicle, Transport for London (TfL) will notify you of a ULEZ charge via a penalty notice. The ULEZ zone is monitored using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras, so you won't be stopped at the entrance of the zone, but a £160 penalty notice will be issued if the charge remains unpaid by midnight on the third day following your entry.Use our Smart Report: ULEZ status update or ULEZ checker on the TfL website to enter your vehicle registration and see if it meets the required standards.

Cars that meet the following criteria are exempt from ULEZ charges:

  • Petrol vehicles meeting Euro 4, Euro 5, or Euro 6 standards.
  • Diesel vehicles meeting Euro 6 standards.
  • All-electric vehicles.
  • Certain hybrid vehicles with specific emissions standards.

The ULEZ is located in central London, extending to areas inside the North and South Circular Roads. The zone has been expanded on 29th of August 2023 to cover more areas as part of ongoing efforts to improve air quality.

To determine if your vehicle is Euro 6 compliant, get our Smart report: ULEZ status update checker. Generally, if your vehicle was manufactured after September 2015, it is likely Euro 6 compliant and exempt from ULEZ charges. You can also verify this information on your vehicle's registration details or check your registration number with our ULEZ checker tool for confirmation. If your vehicle meets ULEZ standards, it will also comply with Euro 6 requirements, with certain exceptions.

Motorcycles that meet Euro 3 emissions standards are also ULEZ compliant. You can verify if your motorcycle or moped is Euro 3 compliant by checking its emissions standards in the vehicle documentation, our Smart report: ULEZ status update or using the ULEZ checker on the TfL website.

As of January 2021, all new motorbikes sold in the EU must meet Euro 5 emissions standards, so if your bike was purchased after this date, it is both Euro 5 and ULEZ compliant. For bikes bought before this period, consult your bike’s registration details or reach out to the manufacturer for confirmation. ULEZ rules require motorbikes to be Euro 3 compliant, so older bikes from around the year 2000 might still qualify without ULEZ charges.

In 2023, the ULEZ was expanded to cover all areas within the North and South Circular Roads. This expansion aimed to include a larger area of London to improve air quality.
